This particular B-17 looks relatively intact despite crash landing into a Agaimbo swamp is located in one of the most remote regions of Papua New Guinea.
When I first read your discussion title it reminded me of Monty Python's Holy Grail TSgt Joe C..

New Guinea is perhaps the most inhospitable area on earth on which to wage war. The vermin, snakes, tigers, and other land animals claimed many Allied lives, and so I am surprised that "jungle rot" did not claim that B-17 after so many decades out in the open. I recall that even the men's boots had to be constantly replaced due to the degradation of the jungle upon anything exposed to it.
