Thank you my friend SGT (Join to see) for making us aware that on June 21, 1939 legendary New York Yankee first baseman, who held the record for consecutive games played until Cal Ripken broke it over a half century later, announced his retirement from professional baseball.
Henry Louis Gehrig, born Heinrich Ludwig Gehrig was nicknamed "the Iron Horse" because he was seemingly unstoppable as he barreled around the bases :-)
It was tragic that Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS] It is both a tribute and a cause for grief that ALS has been called Lou Gehrig Disease.

Lou Gehrig's Toughest Day in Yankee Stadium
Lou Gehrig faced ALS with courage and dignity. When it was time to retire at Yankee stadium, he faced what was arguably another giant challenge for him: being honored.

Nice story. Perhaps the most well remembered moment in baseball history. Tragic that ALS still affects people today.
