Here's the thing... even a broken clock is right twice a day. Preparedness is about mitigating risks; in that sense, a life insurance policy, security system, properly winterizing your vehicles, and checking the nutrition labels on your groceries are all good steps to take. If you're letting those other necessities "go" in order to buy Glock's latest offering, or that "high speed" belt some "gun persona" claims makes you "that much faster"... you're missing the point.
However, we live in a world where human beings are the most deadly predators on the planet. Having, and more importantly... training with, firearms towards self defense, should go hand-in-hand with meeting those other responsibilities.

They keep drinking the kool-aid. Most of us know to have a plan for all aspects, and to have a backup, another backup, and a contingency plan. When the time comes you will do whatever it takes to defend and protect your family. Many of these folks think that help is just a phone call away, with instantaneous response, based upon a false sense of security.
