Little known fact about how bad ass he really was. We used to have a base in Libya. It was being taken over by Muammar al-Gaddafi and his goons. Gaddafi came to the gate to take over the base. Chappie stood in the gate entrance with his sidearm and told him he could have the base when every US servicemen and equipment was gone. Chappie was the commander doing a evacuation. It was an old west stand off and Gaddafi thought better of it and waited till he left to come back...that took huevos!!! Great leader and great Airman!!! Way to pave the way Chappie. If any of yo are passing by Tuskegee I suggest you stop and see the museum. It is worth the stop lot of history on that campus...Chappie, George Washington Carver etc.

Some of the trailers from Wheelus AFB ended up in the B-52 crew quarters at UTapao during Vietnam War.

Actually I did know then Colonel James stared down a Libyan tank because I was an Oil Company Brat living in Tripoli, Libya at the time the incident occurred. I can attest to the incident being a fact not some rumor. Colonel James came to my school to read stories, tell stories and talk about Patriotism, Civil Rights, what Service before self meant. He was larger than life, warm, chariasmatic and a ball buster! A real fighter pilot, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen and a real life Hero! I chose and served in the USAF for 28 hrs thanks to his stories of the USAF and stories on Duty, Honor and Country! I also served as a USAF nurse in the Wheelus AFB Clinic which was moved to Incirlik AB, Adana, Turkey when Wheelus AFB closed. I spent 15 months delivering babies in the former Wheelus AFB Clinic until it got destroyed and was replaced with a real concrete impenetrable hospital in 1994. General James was incredible, World Class, larger than life! He is what today’s generals should be not the limp dxcks, powder puffs, politically correct we now have sadly!
