Thanks for sharing SGT John " Mac " McConnell a summary of Operation North Wind (Unternehmen Nordwind) complete with video. the Germans used the Ardennes region in WWI and twice in WWII. In 1940 German panzers bypassed the Maginot line to strike into the low countries and France using their Blitzkrieg tactics.
In December 1944, banking on a thick cloud cover to impeded allied air strikes, the Germans launched an coordinated offensive which included English speaking SS men disguises as US Army MPs, ruthless Waffen SS soldiers massacring 84 American soldier prisoners at the Belgian town of Malmédy, and many of the Germans best tanks and armored formations.

They made this effort while the Russians were driving hard against the crumbling German eastern front.
The fight at Bastogne captures the imagination of many. However the US and British forces fought along a wide front to stop this offensive and then defeat the Germans in detail. When the cloud cover lifted, the allied air power was brought to bear against the German armor and lines of communication.
