Alfred Bernhard Nobel (/noʊˈbɛl/; Swedish: [ˈalfrɛd nʊˈbɛl] listen (help·info); 21 October 1833 – 10 December 1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist.
Known for inventing dynamite, Nobel also owned Bofors, which he had redirected from its previous role as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major manufacturer of cannon and other armaments. Nobel held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. After reading a premature obituary which condemned him for profiting from the sales of arms, he bequeathed his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes.[1][2] The synthetic element nobelium was named after him.[3] His name also survives in modern-day companies such as Dynamit Nobel and AkzoNobel, which are descendants of mergers with companies Nobel himself established.

Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for reminding us that today is the anniversary of the birthday of Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist who owned Bofors weapons and invented dynamite Alfred Bernhard Nobel.
His principal claim to fame is the fact that he instituted the Nobel Prizes as a philanthropist. Not bad for the guy who developed dynamite and made Bofors into what weapons-knowledgeable folks understand Bofors to be.
I expect that Alfred Noble would be proud that civil-rights-activist Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and puzzled that former US President Barrack Obama was awarded in 2009.

Too bad that Nobel Prize lowered its standards and awarded Nobel Prizes to less than noble people. Example the award to Barack Obama simply for being elected president and we could list others.

The Nobel peace prize gets funded through the purchase of arms for war. What a great legacy but Alfred Nobel at least tried to make the world better by his prizes.
