APOD: 2024 September 6 - Ringed Ice Giant Neptune

Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the September 6th edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). If you had forgotten (like I did) that Saturn is not the only ringed planet in our Solar System, this infrared image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) of the planet Neptune will help you remember. The bright 'star' above the gas giant isn't a star at all...it is Triton, the largest of Neptune's 14 known moons. Details of the planet's ring system are seen here for the first time since 1989, when Neptune was visited by Voyager 2.
