SFC Ralph E Kelley Glad you said that. I get so tired of people always saying "our Democracy", worse saying our system of government is "Capitalism". Nonsense! What that refers to is what happened when free enterprise is used and abused by allowing monopolies, in the form of corporate conglomerates, the way it is now. The whole purpose for monopolies being illegal was so they did not have more "power and control" over government than we, the people, collectively have.
I learned that ours is a "Democratic Constitutional Republic" i.e. the rule of agreed upon law, starting with our Constitution, in which we, the people, exercise democratic process to "self-govern" through political process in which we collectively make and agree upon our rules of law - that build on our Constitution as the stable foundation.
Supposedly that was the origin of Republican and Democrat parties. And way back Democrats were considered to be more concerned about States rights issues, Republicans more Federally centered. So, if a president was a Democrat there would be a lot more stuff going on domestically for the benefit of the states, and we, the people, if Republican, there is usually more concern with our nation's place in the world, and more international policies than domestic.
Clearly it is never cut and dried to that extent. However, in both Houses that still seems to plays out more, depending on the majority party . . .

SGT Mary G. - The thing is at the time of our nation's founding the signers of the Constitution considered a Republic as being distinctly different from a Democracy. It’s only a post 1970s that the terms have begun to be synonymous.
