So, if one or the other is stamped somewhere on the receiver, you can use both without a problem? With the last shortage for ammo rifles stamped 5.56 could also use .223 which meant shooting or not.

Not sure which cal your talking about in your comment. Do not feed a 7.62 chamber .308W cartridges.

But you didn't say why SGT (Join to see)... 5.56 was a military designed round. .223 was the civilian equivalent. The 5.56 has more umppft... which is why the .223 Wylde came out, it can handle both in the chamber/receiver... which now brings us to .308W v 7.62... The 308W was a civilian designed round and is well... hotter than the military 7.62x51.... bolt action Mauser type, 2 locking lugs into a harden receiver v. a blow back spring semi auto or full auto...which makes the 308W the reverse situation of the 5.56/223 fiasco...
InasfarasIknow, no one has worked on a barrel and receiver that can handle 7.62x 51 and .308W interchangeability. I'm thinking a bull barrel would resolve most of this. Something like a free floating barrel v threaded and or tapped... You could run 7.62x51 through a 308W barrel though without much of an issue...lower psi...
Now for Shits and Giggles... I've run both 223 and 5.56 in my 5.56 without any issues, again the .223 isn't as "umfpted" as the 5.56.
Then I've also run 5.56 through a .223... and the shot pattern seemed to be wider. I chrono graphed a difference of about 250-300fps...
Oh and other than the USA military supply chain...I've never run across a 5.56 marked reloading die... .223 all the time...and yes, I run 5.56 brass through my .223 dies. I see no difference in my reloads in psi or during my group therapy sessions when I do this. Anyone out there got a 5.56 reloading marked die set?
I did notice that 5.56 rims upon ejecting do not get damaged as easily as the 223 Remington. Better brass? Perhaps... Last step in case gauging management I do is check the rim if it don't fit in the gauge perfectly...and the military always has a thing about crimping the primer pocket... make sure you ream them... or you'll screw a few primers trying to seat them.
Can you get away with it... 5.56 through a 223...yeah. But why try? Because...just because.
Then... there is the old USA .50 stuff out there... "A" v "N"... Look at the box if you got it and if its marked "AN" it'll go through any .50... but that stuff marked "N"? Well that shit is hotter than hades in summer.... and if you run it through a .50 Barret... well look up Kentucky Ballistics videos and that will tell you why you don't do that crap...and yes... it will blow up and put the shooter in the hospital...or the morgue.
A= Army
N= Navy
Navy has bigger guns...
It is the same with the old school military 30-06 shit. People wonder why 170 soft tip wont run through their Garand... Change the gas port plug...That gun wasn't designed for civilian crap above 150 grains or so... so those 220 grains need more gas room to umfpt...
Eh... just saying SGT (Join to see)...I was bored this morning and only 1 cup of coffee...

I wasn't getting in to .223 Vs. 5.56. I don't own anything that either one of them eats. The only time I used one was to qualify with it. I carried the "Pig". My bullet of choice is one of the 30cal iterations. I do have a .17 and a couple of .22LR guns for varmints. I'll take the 17 before the 22's.
