I have long thought that we (America as well as the rest of the West) missed a golden opportunity when the Soviet Union fell. We should have welcomed the Russian people and helped them grapple with a new sensation: Freedom. Instead, we rushed in to "help" them.
I had a friend who had a vast amount of business experience working with foreign economies and I introduced him to an organization that needed someone like him to help set up operations in Moscow. He was excited about bringing the blessings of a free market system to those poor benighted people, but I warned him that it was going to take time, a long time before they would be ready for it. In my opinion, those who had lived their lives under communist rule would have to die first, and then, possibly, their children might be open to it.
Sadly, I was correct. Western businessmen flooded into the former Soviet Republics and began selling their vision of what the new Russian economy should be to a people who had lived their lives believing that anyone who purchases a product and sells it at a profit is a criminal. Not too surprisingly, those who leaped at the new vision of the Western businessmen were criminals, and a new class of Russians, the oligarchs were born. And the oligarchs helped install Putin to protect their crime syndicates.
So, here we are today and there's Putin attempting to establish a new Soviet empire with himself in the role of Stalin.

SGT Mary G.
CPT Jack Durish Insightful. It truly was and inviting opportunity to the criminally inclined and their well embedded networks. Normal people need time to recover from dictatorships.
I recently learned from one of the 2024 independent candidates, that it didn't help that U.S.A. violated an agreement with Russia, associated with placement of "NATO" bases. That undermined Russia's trust of U.S.A. along with our over-zealous "management" of Ukraine, so of course increased Russia's distrust.

I can see it now, Trump gets reelected and shortly after the war in Ukraine ends. What kind of conspiracy will be launched from leftists when it happens?
