ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) Brig. Gen. Josiah Harmar is defeated by Miami Indians in the Old Northwest Territory on 21 Oct. 1790. (2) Miami Indians pursue militiamen fleeing from their defeat on 19 Oct. 1790. (3) A surviving officer desperately tries to rally troops to break out of their encirclement by assaulting Ojibway warriors with their bayonets on 4 Nov. 1791. (4) After routing militia troops in forward positions, attacking Shawnee, Miami and Delaware warriors grappled with the crews manning Brig. Gen. St. Clair's 6-pounder cannon. (5) Men of Capt. Uriah Springer's light infantry battalion halt the advance of Ojibway and Ottawa Indians. (6) Indian warriors slaughter St. Clair's soldiers trying to escape the trap into which they'd fallen.

Gen Josiah Harmer had quite the brilliant career from the time he was a young soldier of 22 serving in the American Revolutionary War. However, it all came crashing down in Oct 1790 after a battle against Little Turtle, resulting in a bloody slaughter of American militiamen and retreat. Harmar took a lot of heat for not realizing how the Indians preferred to fight (ambush), and for not returning to bury the slain soldiers. Gaining a reputation as a coward, his career was finished and he resigned in 1792.
However, Josiah Harmar’s life finished grace when he returned to Pennsylvania and served as the state's adjutant general from 1793 to 1799. He was popular in Philadelphia during his last years and “well regarded by all who knew him.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josiah_Harmar#American_Revolution

Great share. I was just talking to my kids about the 'Northwest' and the Indian Wars that took place there. They asked where in Oregon did they happen. I had to explain the differences in the two Northwests.
I wish the Columbus Blue Jackets were named for Blue Jacket, but they aren't. Too bad. It would have been a great historical tie in.
