There are two parallel existences. One is the physical and the second, spiritual. The physical is difficult. The spiritual is blissful. Jesus taught that we can overcome the difficulties of the physical existence by seeking out the spiritual. How does he say to do this? He says "The Kingdom of God is Within You!" So, what's to do? Seek Ye First The Kingdom of God which is within the heart. In doing so, the things of the physical world grow strangely dim and the spiritual world lightens the path and the journey right here and up ahead. . . .

So.. God is telling you to be terrible, so bad things don't happen. Seems like convoluted logic.
