I was powerless at 20 ft AGL when my UH1D hit a hilltop at 100 kts indicated & the Huey rolled to port, with those of us on board looking out the open cargo door straight at the ground. The impact knocked the controls out of the AC’s hands, but the co-pilot was a WO2 had many flight hours in his log book. He was able to calmly reach forward and grab the controls and catch the chopper as we bounced into the air and turn upright so we we could wobble to a nearby artillery fire base. He even held us in a shakey hover while the crew chief and I jumped out either side and hit the ground to look for damage to the underside of the chopper Only the left skid had hit the ground and was left dangling in mid-air. We both climbed back on board and the Chief shouted to the AC what we had found and the WO2 limped us back to our own LZ. Black there, the Chief and I both jumped out again and grabbed some empty ammo boxes that we used to make a bed for the Huey to rest on. It was scary as all get-out! All I could think to say in a short prayer before we hit again was, “Thanks, Lord! It’s been beautiful!”
