In the early 70s, when we made passage through the San Bernadino Straits and turned north past Manila Bay and into Subic Bay, the jungle came right down to the beach all the way. By the mid-80s, the jungle had been clear cut to such an extent that few remnants were visible. The monsoons have always been heavy in the PI. Trees mitigated that to some extent.
