MAJ Hugh Blanchard No. The first to get parachutes were observers in balloons on the front starting in 1917. Only a handful of pilots of planes got chutes in late 1918.

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - Now that took guts. It was "interesting" enough at Airborne School even after I had been sport jumping. But to deliberately go up hundreds or thousands of feet in a Zeppelin or observer balloon with no means of safe exit? Wow.

SPC Bill Bailey - What's the phrase? I had an Advanced Course classmate who had a plane (a Navajo) and a private pilot's license and took several of us flying. He said you never want to run out of altitude, ideas and airspeed at the same time.

If it was on fire, yeah. If not, I think I'd eat my pistol. Maybe that too on the way down if I had to jump.
