Defense officials have announced a $96 million grant to replace a 60-year-old public school on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
The grant will replace the Mokapu Elementary School, which is rated in “poor” condition on the Defense Department’s 2019 “Public Schools on Military Installations Prioritized List.” The deficiencies and capacity issues placed the school at No. 33 on that priority list of public schools operated on bases by local school districts.

Defense officials have announced a $96 million grant to replace a 60-year-old public school on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL The children of our brothers and sisters in arms deserve to have a modern school fully equipped to prepare them for the future after they graduate. My school district spent over 60 million bucks to renovate and add onto my high school in 2011-2012.

The high school I went to was built in the early 60's and is still operating and well maintained

And that's all it takes, but humans always think, to have things new and think it's better. When I worked at the US Naval ship repair facility on Guam, we had a Floating Crain that was made in 1942, we always fixed and kept it up, always worked and did it's job. Funny, the operator finally retired, he had 47 years in service working at the ship yard. Also, when he retired, he then had three of his sons work there too.

I graduated in 1970. That school was torn down a few years ago. The newest part was built in the mid'60. The oldest part was from around 1900.

SPC Michael Terrell - What we called the old part was built in the late 40's early 50's, but I remember to old twin schools standing next to the newer one until it was torn down and replace with the new one

Sgt Jim Belanus - The elementary school I went too, in the early 60's was built in 1959, the same time Anderson AFB was built. And, the school name was called Anderson Elm school, for all the Anderson AFB children went to that school, just a few of us locals living outside of the base fence, was allowed to attend there.
After 6th grade, I had to go to a middle school, 7th grade was at Wettengel school, which was the old military BAQ barracks, made out of tin sheeting, and 2 story's high.
Anderson Elm school was released and given to Gov Guam in the 80's and in the 90's, Anderson Elm school it was torn down and rebuilt, and called a new local name.
The Navy in the 90's, built schools in Anderson AFB and the Guam Naval station, for only the active military children, or retired persons children, and local outside of the fence children are not allowed to go to schools there. Talk about segregation. Lol
