APOD: 2022 March 14 - Star Formation in the Eagle Nebula

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the March 14th International Pi Day edition of the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Star Formation in the Eagle Nebula." The Eagle Nebula (M16) lies about 6500 light years away, spans about 20 light-years, and is visible with binoculars toward the constellation Serpens. It has been a favorite Hubble target of mine since the first images came back in 1995. This close-up focuses on evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs), for at the end of each EGG is a newly formed star. Heat from the new star will gradually eat away at the surrounding gas and dust...unless a supernova happens first.
