Japan Again Raises Concern Over 10 Warship Russian Navy Surface Group - USNI News

Japanese officials are raising concerns over a ten-ship Russian naval group that transited from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan via the Tsugaru Strait between Honshu and Hokkaido on Thursday.
The warships, belonging to the Russian Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy, had been previously seen in February operating in the southern part of the Sea of Japan and in the Sea of Okhotsk, according to the Friday release from Japan’s Joint Staff Office.
The ships were the destroyer RFS Admiral Panteleyev (548), corvettes RFS Sovershennyy (333), RFS Gromkiy (335), RFS Gremyashchiy (337), RFS Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov (339), RFS Metel (323), RFS Koryeyets (390), an Altay class replenishment ship, Search and Rescue ship Igor Belousov and a Sorum class tugboat (MB-99).

If I had to bet, they received orders to head towards the Black Sea before Turkey closed off access and are now treading water pending new orders.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - The USS Truman, CVN-75 (Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier) and the USS San Jacinto, CG-56 (Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser), are currently in the Northern Aegean. Six other NATO ships are in the Southern Aegean (5 x US of unknown type, 1 x Norwegian of unknown type). Turkey, which controls the straits, is a NATO Alliance member, and tensions between Turkey and Russia may increase should Russia attempt to reinforce its naval presence in the Black Sea.
