Like Maj Robert Thornton I grew up riding the subways from the time I was 12 without a parent present. I can't even imagine that anymore SGT (Join to see)

I reckon I had a good childhood. The largest metropolitan area I lived in was Fayetteville NC and I removed myself from that place in 1983.

I grew up in NJ and NY, my dad rode the subway daily. When I was older I thought nothing about heading into the city, riding the Long Island RR, then switching to the subway.
The trick, in my mind was to make sure you only headed to areas you knew were, supposedly, safe. By the time my parents left NY, I had already left, crime on the subways had risen; you can't have Port Authority cops everywhere. Today it is far worse than when I lived there.
There are probably many reasons I have not visited the area on Long Island where I grew up. It's just not the same anymore.

I have 2 nephews and a nephew-in-law on the Port Authority police force. One told a story of patrolling the Port Authority Bus Terminal on the graveyard shift. He would start making his rounds, and gradually pick up a parade of waiting passengers following along behind him. Everybody tried to look casual, but they were mighty glad to be near someone with a badge and gun.

To have and not need is better then to need and not have. I'm too slow to run and too old to take an ass whipping. I carry daily. I'm 77 and the wife is 72. Its my job to protect us both.
