Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 520: Colliding Galaxies from Hubble." Queue Arthur 'Guitar Boogie' Smith and Dueling Banjos, and take in this morning's galactic mixing bowl. NGC 520 lies some 100 million light years away in the constellation Pisces (The Fish). It discovered by astronomer William Herschel on December 13, 1784. The almost vertical dust band forms a boundary between what was once two separate galaxies. The feathery edges throughout the image suggest a strong stellar wind due to intense starburst activity.
Our perspective on Earth (we see NGC-520 edge on) limits what data we can gather from visible light. But that isn't the case with either infrared or radio wavelengths. We can detect similar infrared and radio data from NGC 520 as we do from the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038 and 4039), which are also undergoing a galactic collision. William Herschel is also credited with the discovery the Antenna Galaxies (in 1785).

A similar looking collision might be expected in a few billion years when our disk Milky Way Galaxy to collides with our large-disk galactic neighbor Andromeda (M31).
I suspect this will not be helpful to whatever life is on any of the planets close to it.
