Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "HD 163296: Jet from a Star in Formation." Ever wonder what our Solar System looked like in its formative days? Data from Planetary System HD 163296 gives us some suggestions. Found in the constellation Sagittarius, and located only 398 light years away, a new star is being formed. The central image is based on radio-wave data, but you can see the accretion disk about the new star. The gaps in the rings around the accretion disk are caused by two proto-planets, each a little larger than the size of Neptune. The jets emerging from the new star are in visible light, and consist of mostly hydrogen. Researchers suspect that magnetic fields about the new star are responsible for generating the jets.
The term 'astronomical unit' (AU) is used to represent the distance between the Sun and Earth. These planets are (respectively) 105 and 160 AUs from their host star. To put that in perspective, Pluto (the most distant planet in our Solar System) is ~49 AU from the Sun. So if life does exist there, it likely won't be in a form that we recognize today.
