APOD: 2021 April 21 - Centaurus As Warped Magnetic Fields

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Centaurus A's Warped Magnetic Fields." Centaurus A is located in the southern constellation of the same name. If you live above 35 degrees North latitude, your viewing opportunities will be best left to the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The ESO, in conjunction with the Chandra X-Ray and Spitzer Infrared Space Telescopes, have produced this image to demonstrate the effects on the magnetic fields of two galaxies as they collide and merge.
Also known as NGC 5128, Centaurus A was discovered by astronomer James Dunlop in 1826. New characteristics were identified as technology improved: Centaurus A was classified as an extragalactic radio source in 1949, X-ray emissions were first detected in 1970, gamma ray emissions were observed in 1975, and the relativistic jets we see in this image were first identified in 1979. Visible light from ESO is shown in white, sub-millimeter wavelengths are shown in orange, X-ray in blue, and infrared in red. Magnetic field data was gathered by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (aka SOFIA), a joint project operated by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

This is an interesting post-processing photo displaying 'evidence' of something which apparently occurred thousands of years ago.
The hypothesis of what are the second and third order effects when galaxies collide is interesting.
Of course 'colliding' galaxies are under God's control. I would think merging galaxies makes more sense than colliding galaxies.

"Explanation: When galaxies collide -- what happens to their magnetic fields? To help find out, NASA pointed SOFIA, its flying 747, at galactic neighbor Centaurus A to observe the emission of polarized dust -- which traces magnetic fields. Cen A's unusual shape results from the clash of two galaxies with jets powered by gas accreting onto a central supermassive black hole. In the resulting featured image, SOFIA-derived magnetic streamlines are superposed on ESO (visible: white), APEX (submillimeter: orange), Chandra (X-rays: blue), and Spitzer (infrared: red) images. The magnetic fields were found to be parallel to the dust lanes on the outskirts of the galaxy but distorted near the center. Gravitational forces near the black hole accelerate ions and enhance the magnetic field. In sum, the collision not only combined the galaxies’ masses -- but amplified their magnetic fields. These results provide new insights into how magnetic fields evolved in the early universe when mergers were more common."
