APOD: 2021 February 21 - NGC 2244: A Star Cluster in the Rosette Nebula

Good afternoon, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "NGC 2244: A Star Cluster in the Rosette Nebula." You may recall that the APOD visited the Rosette Nebula recently in honor of Valentines Day. We now are going closer into the nebula to look at the star cluster that astronomers believe only formed some 5,000 years ago. Based on the Rosette Nebula being 4,000 light years from Earth, we are seeing some of the first light from these stars. And if you head over to the repository of images from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory at Harvard (chandra.harvard.edu; I'll post a link in a separate comment), you'll see x-ray data collected from the Rosette Nebula. Based on current photos of globular clusters, I think NGC 2244 might be on its way to becoming another of the ~160 globular clusters already identified in our Milky Way.

The description 'Rosette Nebula's center measures about 50 light-years across, lies about 5,200 light-years away' along with the 'very specific colors of Sulfur (shaded red), Hydrogen (green), and Oxygen (blue)' which highlight this section of the heavens enables those of us with eyes to see a change to praise the LORD for this glory of the heavens image.

"Explanation: In the heart of the Rosette Nebula lies a bright open cluster of stars that lights up the nebula. The stars of NGC 2244 formed from the surrounding gas only a few million years ago. The featured image taken in January using multiple exposures and very specific colors of Sulfur (shaded red), Hydrogen (green), and Oxygen (blue), captures the central region in tremendous detail. A hot wind of particles streams away from the cluster stars and contributes to an already complex menagerie of gas and dust filaments while slowly evacuating the cluster center. The Rosette Nebula's center measures about 50 light-years across, lies about 5,200 light-years away, and is visible with binoculars towards the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros).
