APOD: 2021 January 27 - The Vertical Magnetic Field of NGC 5775

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Vertical Magnetic Field of NGC 5775." Found some 70 million light years away in the constellation Virgo, NGC 5775 might seem innocuous given its edge-on perspective from Earth. But couple visual data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) with radio data from the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) Telescope, a different picture emerges.
I would title this image "A Cauldron of Creation." Within the disk of NGC 5775 (assigned the color magenta), bubbles of ionized gas are produced by newly-born stars. Fast moving charged particles created in these bubbles form an electromagnetic “radio continuum halo” represented here in blue-gray. Some particles (also called cosmic rays) become snagged by magnetic fields, shown as “flow lines” (based on VLA data). The flow lines start off parallel to the disk (assigned fuchsia in this region) and curve away until they are vertical. In this upper region (assigned blue) the most extended feature can be traced as high as 26,000 light-years — that is a quarter of the galaxy’s diameter! Fun stuff.

Belated thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Vertical Magnetic Field of NGC 5775." Nothing quite like a 'close-up' of this section of God's creation we call the constellation Virgo.
This ethereal Large Array (VLA) radio telescope image reminds me I should avoid this NGC 5775 galaxy this since I have ferrous wires stuck in my heart :-)
Since it is about 70 million light years away that should not be difficult to manage :-)

"Explanation: How far do magnetic fields extend up and out of spiral galaxies? For decades astronomers knew only that some spiral galaxies had magnetic fields. However, after NRAO's Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope (popularized in the movie Contact) was upgraded in 2011, it was unexpectedly discovered that these fields could extend vertically away from the disk by several thousand light-years. The featured image of edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5775, observed in the CHANG-ES (Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies) survey, also reveals spurs of magnetic field lines that may be common in spirals. Analogous to iron filings around a bar magnet, radiation from electrons trace galactic magnetic field lines by spiraling around these lines at almost the speed of light. The filaments in this image are constructed from those tracks in VLA data. The visible light image, constructed from Hubble Space Telescope data, shows pink gaseous regions where stars are born. It seems that winds from these regions help form the magnificently extended galactic magnetic fields."
