Thank you my friend MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. for posting the perspective of militarytimes.com on a baited question.
Obviously this depends on where the troops are stationed, what pay grade they are, do they dependents, what the COLA is for the region they are billeted in, etc.

Since the dawn of this Nation "NOBODY" enlists in our Military for the money. If you are lucky you have more good experiences than terrible ones. You may make a career out of it but a majority are "One and Done". When I left AD the first time I was a PSG in an ABN IN company with a gross income of Approx 24 grand a year counting BAH, Jump pay etc. Went from all of that into a job changing light bulbs at a university at 36 grand Gross no BAH,Jump pay etc. These days I make as much as GO give or take. Everyone has their own reason for joining both good and bad. I think that Soldiers get paid below their worth for the most part, but we all know some that are not worthy of their current pay. To keep the ranks filled its always good to keep that pay as close to livable as we can given budgets and deficits.
