How did we go from "Peace and Love" in the 60's to where we are now? I realized in the late 70's a Liberal Arts Degree was going to get me nowhere in the future and went into an Apprenticeship. I did not fall in to the, "Ive got a Degree, so you owe me" mindset. I never did anything to you, nor took anything from you, I Don't owe You $}{!t.

Too many kids bought into that. Our grandson is doing an apprenticeship along with a technical associate's degree

The mindset as we grew up with was much more live-and-let live than is common today. Actually more tolerant in many ways. We grew up with a mentality of individual liberty, and we defended it strictly. It said, "let me live my life as a free citizen of a free nation...stay out of my business and I will reciprocate by staying out of yours." Today, Twitter and Facebook turn this ideal on its head. Every Tweet is monitored for "correctness" and those not speaking "correctly" are muted and vilified. Supporting your 2nd amendment rights is one of those items that will get you vilified on Twitter.

Guess what, Col? Your First Amendment right to free speech does not apply to private business. It says "Congress shall make no law..." soooo if you don't like it, take your business elsewhere.

MAJ (Join to see) - Respectfully, bite me Major. My first amendment right DOES apply to me, and I was speaking of my youth, and how we respected each other's individual freedoms. The broad acceptance today of private mega-companies telling us what we can and cannot say is not a violation of the constitution, and I never said it was. It is a symptom of a broader problem...where people feel they cannot push back against Big Brother. Even if Big Brother is big tech, I have the right to say they suck for squelching individual Liberty. They DO suck for that.

I have a 2 year degree in electronics - switched to computer programming shortly after I got my degree. 95% self taught - and here I am almost 30 years later near the top of the IT ladder. Never took a loan, paid 100% as I went.
Our youngest had no desire to go to college. Instead, he is a journeyman electrician and a certified HVAC tech. No debts and before he was 25 was making over $50k/yr. I can echo what others have said on this entry - the mindset has changed. Social media is an avenue of "look at me! see how great I am!" now turn off the camera and go back to my dumpy apartment and soulless job where I absolutely hate life and everyone in it.

Too many young people have nothing to fall back on and feel that since they did what, they believed, was expected(go to college) they should be taken care of. 16 credit hours in 1987 and I'd have been an Engineer, BSEE.

MSgt Robert "Rock" Aldi - Thank you for your words! The Marine Corps taught me to work first and play later. I am ambitiously lazy by nature. So when work needs to be done I find the shortest path to that destination so I have more time to be lazy (or play). And it did indeed rub off on to 2 of our 3 kids.
I think these all point to the little attitudes that are lacking in too many "young uns" today. Sadly.
