APOD: 2020 October 15 - Galaxies in Pegasus

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Galaxies in Pegasus." The constellation Pegasus lies between Cygnus (The Swan), Aquarius, Pisces (The Fish), and Andromeda. Twelve star systems found in Pegasus are believed to have their own exoplanets, suggesting that our own Solar System is far from a unique phenomenon. These discoveries are likely due to earlier deep sky findings within Pegasus, as shown in today's image.
At the upper right is NGC 7331, discovered by William Herschel in 1784. It lies about 40 million light years away from Earth. The other galaxies scattered about NGC 7331 are NGC 7335, 7336, 7337, and 7340. They are further away, lying (respectively) 332, 365, 348 and 294 million light years distant. At the lower left is Stephan's Quintet, discovered by Édouard Stephan in 1877. This tight cluster of galaxies consists of NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, NGC 7319, and NGC 7320C. It is also referred to as Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 92, and collectively lies about 300 million light years from Earth.

An amazing plethora of galaxies and stars, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price! The shear magnitude of galaxies and stars of which Galaxy NGC 7331 is 50 MILLION Light years away from us gives one some idea of how vast the universe is...remembering, of course, that just one light year is the total distance light travels in one Earth Year and that by itself is amazing... We certainly are not alone in our Universe at least in terms of celestial objects and I postulate that there are many civilizations among the vastness of space, some like humanoid species and others, perhaps, totally different... Just speculation at our point in time... Excellent APOD this morning, Bill!
