As we live longer dementia is becoming more prevalent. I had a patient who developed the so called pre-senile subtype, and she died in her early 60's. There are many kinds of mental decline. Alzheimer's is the most common. It shows a gradual decline over decades. Memory for others is the first to fade; then sense of self disappears. It is quite heart breaking for loved ones. We refer to the death trajectory as lingering and protracted.

Hopefully, the whole we can only confirm after death does not make anyone feel good.
