APOD: 2020 September 26 - Moon Pairs and the Synodic Month

Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Moon Pairs and the Synodic Month." A synodic month is defined as the time interval between two consecutive occurrences of a particular lunar phase (such as new moon or full moon) as seen by an observer on Earth. The mean length of the synodic month is 29.53059 days (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, 2.8 seconds). This can vary up to seven hours due to the eccentricity of the Moon's orbit around Earth (and to a lesser degree, the Earth's elliptical orbit around the Sun).
Today's feature image shows a progression of Moon pairs (waning/waxing) as we progress through the lunar synodic month. Based on what I saw two nights ago (it's been cloudy in the North Carolina Piedmont basin), we are at Day 9 (waxing Gibbous). Each Moon pair was captured outside Ragusa, Sicily by regular APOD contributor Marcella Giulia Pace.

Good Saturday morning, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and Thank you for this APOD... This one isn't the most exciting APOD Astronomy Magazine has published, but it is interesting... The more we find out about the moon, the more we need to find out... For that reason, alone I am excited over the possibility of a moon base, where humans can really find and understand the detail which makes the moon, both fascinating and important as we reach out to the stars... These wonderful pictures are each of the lit side of the moon by regular APOD contributor Marcella Giulia Pace outside Ragusa, Sicily are well coupled and this composite would make a wonderful art work IMHO.

"Explanation: Observe the Moon each night and its visible sunlit portion will gradually change. In phases progressing from New Moon to Full Moon to New Moon again, a lunar cycle or synodic month is completed in about 29.5 days. They look full, but top left to bottom right these panels do show the range of lunar phases for a complete synodic month during August 2019 from Ragusa, Sicily, Italy, planet Earth. For this lunar cycle project the panels organize images of the lunar phases in pairs. Each individual image is paired with another image separated by about 15 days, or approximately half a synodic month. As a result the opposite sunlit portions complete the lunar disk and the shadow line at the boundary of lunar night and day, the terminator, steadily marches across the Moon's familiar nearside. For extra credit, what lunar phase would you pair with the Moon tonight?"
