It's been 46 years since I was trained on the M-16, so I don't remember what we were told.

I use "Liberal Tears" Gun Oil and Cleaner. It is a 2 part solution; one fluid is a cleaner, and the other is a lubricant.
As far as lubricating the BCG, you only need to lube moving parts and metal to metal contact. A drop or two and then rub evenly with your finger. Anything more is a dirt magnet, which when mixed with oil, forms mud. Mud will jam your action.
