I can look back on my career and easily identify those points where I had a great team/good team or bad team by the results we were able to achieve. Very rarely are you able to assemble your own team in the Marine Corps it is usually appointed to you. I am assuming that is the case with all military except at the highest levels where I am aware certain Commanders actually went out and 'acquired their Senior staff. With that said it is always in the leaders perview to cull/groom and grow their staff into a team of professionals who will help them not hinder the Command and its members.
