The non-retaliation was a sign of things to come from the Johnson Administration.

As that happened in ‘65 and depending when it happened.. I was 11 or 12.. I didn’t find out until later that one of our cousins.. A Marine was wounded in that.. Didn’t know how bad.... until he told us that he got Air-evacced by chopper to One of our bases for care.., His Commander and the Ambassador lost little time in recognizing personnel that had been wounded.. including the civilian workers..
They kept the ceremony low key.. no publicizing there... The cousin said him and some others were Air evacced to the Philippines.. He told us to be low key.. the media will blow things out of proportion.. even that info the PAO released.. people didn’t need to know e’thing.. the enemy has spies e’where..
they report e’thing back.. rumors and fact.. as the ol’ saying goes “loose lips sink ships!”.. all it will do is strengthen their resolve.. and we don’t need another attempt.. So I kept cousin’s wounding out of talking about current events.. no need to throw fuel on the fire.. kids run outta school spreading stories.. there are some not-to-bright adults(?) our in the world .. they don’t care where the news came from..

About my age then.. I was 11 at that point.. the bombing was in March.. that’d put me at 5th grade.. I’d read the war wouldn’t last long.. just would have to wait and see..
