Except when we retire a legacy system and don’t replace it with new technology. Then we just have a gap.
Or our “new technology” isn’t as capable as the legacy system it replaced.
The Air Force is very experienced at retiring functional equipment without a replacement or replacing it with new technology that doesn’t deliver.
