It's not a bad idea honestly, wait for them to arrive at their first duty station and then have their uniforms sized and fitted would save the Soldier and the Army money in the long run, I can't tell you how many times during a dress uniform inspection brand new soldiers are told to go have their uniforms refitted.

Agree with that and also they would have the time and the option for buying upgrades instead of just going with issue only. Though I am not sure what they are going to wear when they are out on the town on pass for Family Day and such.

So who will teach them how to properly wear and put together the Class A’s??

Their first unit? Dumb idea.

"Out of the roughly 110,000 recruits who go to basic training, about 104,000 make it to advanced individual training, he said.

"So then, by the time they go from AIT to their first unit, that number drops down to about 94,000," Thomas said. "And so, if you do the math, that's about 16,000 soldiers ... that are dropped and so there is an opportunity to realize a cost savings by issuing the uniform to soldiers when they go to their first unit, as opposed to issuing the uniform at basic training.""

EDIT NOTE, 16,000 uniforms "wasted" is about 13 million dollars in direct cash, and does not include man hours paid for and wasted, plus all the other associated real costs incurred from the day uniform was ordered to the day is was taken back from a failed service member and hanging it on a class B rack at military clothing and sales, or dumped at DRMO.

So Id rather see something like.

Issue them in a consolidated manner at AIT locations ... Solves the wasted money on issues to SM who never get to a 1st unit.
Solves the need to create and fund stockage and distro to hundreds of locations (every separate post and MSC, or worse have to send the SM TDY to "regional" locations to get issued.)

Keeps a more even hand at teaching wear and fit... the more hands you put into that the more deviation there will be.

The idea to same money makes sense and is valid, the how proposed not so much

Correct SGM. The attrition is staggering... I read lately that the new Army Greens will be issued at the first duty station which will save a lot of money on uniforms and alterations. Get in and then get all of your new gear; makes sense when you look at it that way.
