America is unusual among all nations. It does not share a common religion, ethnicity, race, color, or any other human characteristic. It's not a piece of real estate. It's a tribe, but not in the usual sense. It's a tribe sharing a common culture of individual liberty and individual responsibility. That culture freed its citizens to build the greatest nation ever found anywhere on Earth at any time in history. Other nations have attempted to transplant that culture to their own with varying degrees of success. Their failures have been rooted in their imperfect understanding of the American culture. For example, using it as the foundation for a democracy is doomed to failure. America is not a democracy. Indeed, it is not any form of government. It's limited government, and established governments are loathe to give up power to achieve an American style of culture. What saddens me today is that many Americans have a similarly imperfect vision of America and its culture. Thus, they are attracted to other models such as socialism, a proven failure. But there will always be nascent tyrants singing the siren song of socialism and waving free stuff as inducements to surrender freedom for freedom from responsibility. And they use diversity as a wedge to set up against one another. Thus, our greatness has been squandered. Sad. Really sad...
