Local hero as well- my 4th grade teacher is his cousin. While that sounds weird- my teacher gave the thank you speech when they rededicated the Air Field as Bud Day Field. We have always stayed in touch and out of 5 other brothers and sister all but two had her for a teacher. She has always been a stanch supporter of the military and still a good friend to this day. She always comments on her students that have gone on to military careers and can tell you what each have done- or branch of service. Col Day was a true hero in spirit and integrity. Great post Lt Col Charlie Brown
With his work on Tricare for Life the entire military populace owes Col Day a huge debt of thanks.

Great post, Lt Col Charlie Brown. I didn't know that. I got to meet him when he was the Key Note Speaker at our annual EOD Memorial Ball at Eglin AFB. His story is one that should be better known in military circles. A great man, and a very entertaining speaker.

When I was on a deployment, the base I was stationed at held a dedication ceremony of two buildings one for Col Bud Day and one for Colonel Leo Thorsness. My daughter and wife were invited to the dinner the night before and lo an behold they were able to sit with him and his wife Doris. They also engaged with Col Thorsness. Col Day talked to my 10 year old daughter like she was somebody and an adult. He talked about how old his kids were when he was shot down. My daughter was amazed. What an amazing man and evening that they will cherish and remember forever...plus it was extra special because he talked to her about how tough it is on dads being away as well. Great memory and I am glad to see that he was honored in such a special way...I just wish it would have happened while he was alive.

His autobiographies read more like a fictional character. Would one of us have the fortitude to endure what one of these POWs had too?
