Operation Overlord depended on good weather for a launch of an armada of ships and an amazing number of aircraft .
In 1944 the British had night time bombing responsibility while US Army air Corps had daylight responsibilities.
The interdiction against ammunition and fuel depots as well as transportation nodes and convoys was relying on skills of bombardiers and dumb bombs. It took a lot of ordnance to reduce a stationary target. Fighter bombers were best suited for attacking trains and convoys.
