Lying like a number of other offenses, is a "slippery slope ". At girst, there is some supposed justification such as, "I didn't want to hurt feelings" or it was not important or I was embarrassed but it can quickly escalate. Once you start down that road, it's tough to turn around.

Truth...an interesting topic. Why? The truth is as much a responsibility of the speaker of it as it is in the understanding of its receiver. Sometimes it is wise to have someone you truly trust to help differentiate between truth and untruth. Untruths are manipulative and self-serving while truth generally applies to serving others...even if they don't always like to hear it. However, some truths can be judgemental in nature...so we must be careful how they are catalogued in our minds. For instance, when I was a young officer I can remember a very senior military advisor in my reserve unit who I would often come to and ask what does this mean? He would almost always say, "what does the regulation say about it". You see, I knew he knew...and he knew he knew...but he was teaching me to rely on myself and dig. Was he lying to me, or manipulating me...no and no. Because of his unwillingness to share an easy route to the truth...I learned much more than I would have. There is as much responsibility to deciding what is truth? A convenience as in self-serving, an obfuscation of fact or the denial of it, or simply a way to not reveal so that others learn? Ha...the truth about truth is important.

Telling the truth seems to be one of the hardest things for people to be consistent on. Trust is the key to every relationship- and the foundation of building trust comes from the truth. Great thought today COL Mikel J. Burroughs

I always say what ij know to be true. I will not be called a liar or thought of as a person of bad character.
I have learned over the past few years however, to just say nothing.
