Thanks for letting us know Maj Marty Hogan that December 3 is the anniversary of the birth of American soldier, civil engineer, railroad executive, and politician George Brinton McClellan who ran for President against Abraham Lincoln and lost handily.
George Brinton McClellan graduated in the USMA, West Pint class of 1846 as graduate number 1,273. Thomas Stonewall Jackson [grad 1,288] was his classmate along with CSA General George Pickett [grad 1,330] of Gettysburg fame.

"George Brinton McClellan was an American soldier, civil engineer, railroad executive, and politician.A graduate of West Point, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican-American War, and later left the Army to work in railroads until the outbreak of the American Civil War.Early in the war, McClellan was appointed to the rank of major general and played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army, which would become the Army of the Potomac; he served a brief period as general-in-chief of the Union Army.Although McClellan was meticulous in his planning and preparations, these very characteristics hampered his ability to challenge aggressive opponents in a fast-moving battlefield environment."

He was a bit indecisive and kind of a wuss. Always worried how history would view him and not much of a gambler.

I went to Ft McClellan for MP school in 1981. When I learned about more about the General later, I was disappointed. The base he was named after had a better reputation than he did. I was only there a short time, but I loved the area.
