The Modocs sealed their own fate by killing Canby. Attacking emissaries at a peace conference was bound to bring an overwhelming response. The fact that the Modocs didn't grasp that was their misfortune.

I'm a casual reader of Native American History. Something I think that leads to conflict is when cultures have customs and beliefs that are totally alien to each other. Two things that come to mind when looking at conflicts between the Native Americans and the US was that Natives had no concept of individual ownership of land and questioned the need for borders. The second thing was that natives didn't see how they, as individuals would be bound to or responsible for the actions of other tribal members. If a few renegades went off on their own and raided the US punished the entire tribe.

Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for sharing the video focused on the Modoc Campaign led by Captain Jack who led 52 warriors in a band of more than 150 Modoc people who left the Klamath Reservation in California.
Unintended consequences or ill conceived plans is an apt summary IMHO of the fact that in "April 1873 at a peace commission meeting, Captain Jack and others killed General Edward Canby and Rev. Eleazer Thomas, and wounded two others, mistakenly believing this would encourage the Americans to leave."
Of course the response by the US Government was overwhelming.
Injustice knows no bounds when unconstrained by inherent goodness or applicable laws.
