Thanks for honoring Federal COL Robert Gould Shaw who led the 54th Massachusetts Regiment and was killed leading his soldiers at the second battle of Fort Wagner SGT John " Mac " McConnell. That assault required the regiment to attack along a narrow beach into the waiting confederate guns.
Anybody who has tried to run on sand has an understanding of what that assault would be like without the Minié balls zipping past ands thudding when they hit flesh and bone.

Matthew Broderick bore a striking resemblance to the real Col Shaw, when the photographs are compared side by side. I always thought Broderick did an excellent job of portraying the historical character and the struggles he went through to transform his unit and gain acceptance for it.

Happy birthday. Great movie too. At Fort Benning, my infantry OSUT unit was 2/54 INF.
