To Any Vietnam Veteran Who May See This,

As a post 9/11, I don’t think I can thank your generation enough. It was a terrible and unfortunate thing that happened when you came home. Good, bad, or indifferent on your opinion on Vietnam, you were asked to go and you went – and many of you weren’t thanked for the sacrifices that you bore. I don’t know if that can ever be healed for some. I can only imagine how I would feel, but I didn’t get that type of treatment, and I can attribute that to you.

If there is any solace, know what you went through allowed my generation to be acknowledged and thanked the way we are. I don’t know if veterans today would be acknowledged and treated the way we are without what you endured. It taught the country an important lesson to never treat our service-members that way again.

I know your heart and mind go back to the days you came home, but please know that our generation sees you as heroes, and we can’t thank you enough for the cross you had no choice but to bear.

– Tanner

Enlisted in 1988 during the Cold War and wanted to do my part like our previous generation of veterans did who were in Vietnam. Felt a solemn duty and obligation to do my part in carrying the baton forward on to the next generation of Post 9/11-GWOT veterans.

Well written, SSgt Iskra. Thanks for the kind words. When I returned in Nov '68, the 'States seemed like a different country than the one I had left a year earlier: MLK & RFK had both been killed & my wife at the time had me served with divorce papers my third day back. And my job that was supposed to be held open for me hadn't been. Loving parents and good friends and lots of prayer saw me through that period and I came out smelling like a rose, but not all were so fortunate. Thank you for your service, Tanner. And God bless you & yours.

Our local American Legion Post 641 Baden, Pa. has been honoring this event for the last few years. Hats off to our Officers for making this event a wonderful thing. It’s a great get together.

Our event has been cancelled indefinitely because of virus. Also our Legion Post is shut down for a few weeks.
