The tragedy of the deaths of 2 of four Americans at the hands of Drug Cartels operating in Mexico begs the question - When is enough - enough?
Some are calling for US Military intervention to level the head of the snake and place "salt" on the body of the snake to desiccate its mobility and striking capacity.
Some are calling for less aggressive means.

Is it that hard for those who call themselves leaders to - actually led???
Of course, the answer is simple ..........................

I'm all in with COL Cudworth and his post.
That said, if this folks didn't do their due diligence before they traveled, then it's on them. There's no way my family will go anywhere in Mexico given the current violence there.

One thing is certain we will not do anything while democrats are in control. Democrats humiliaated us in Vietnam and in Afghanistan.

Even before these incidents, worldwide Mexico has the highest murder rate of visitors to their country which had already reached 35% of those on the entire planet Earth. It's not all drug cartels either but all sorts of Criminals running out of control. I have no intention of visiting Mexico anytime with things that out of control.

I believe that the leadership in this country is in cahoots with the drug suppliers and that is how they have all these arms and training and the excuse of open borders,,
if you do not know the story of the pilot hired by the CIA to traffic drugs for them so they could fund their own programs, I guess you enlighten yourself..
Ask yourself, who really funded the assassination of JFK??
There are no ties to or was there any resentment for anything JFK did to Lee H. Oswald to have him murder him.
A job , just in the right place at the right time... No one saw Lee bring the weapon in the building..
A simple man able to plan and pin point the exact place and timing of the President?? , but that is a whole different story..
Beware the monster you created... AI is next..

I've Been To Mexico A Couple Of Times, Around The Border Areas Of Uvalde,Texas.
Mainly Out Of Curiosity And To See How They Lived.... Then Again About 6 Months Later,
When My Future Wife Was Purchasing A Custom Tailored Wedding Dress & The Brides Maids Were Doing The Same....I Had No Problems What-So-Ever, And All Went Smoothly.
I Would NOT, However, Go Very Deep Into Mexico As The Populations Are Living Mostly In Poverty.. And When One Is INTO One Of Those Area, They Can Expect To Be Stolen From.
After All, What's The WORST That CAN Happen?
OTHER THAN Getting Your-ass Beat-Up & Murdered?

Under present "Leadership", CiC on down, it would just be another Embarrassment, the ROE's from this Leadership would just get Troops Killed! This needs to be a No holds Barred, Unannounced Wipe Out, Hunt Down. I mean Hunt Down, Blow the Mansions to smithereens, hunt down all the Dealers, Soldiers and Mules till all are accounted for. Plan in very closed Circle, no unnecessary People that could Leak, Plan to hit all Cartels at exact same time, Covert Staging that give close to exact Travel Time. Do not announce to Mexico till Bombs actually fall, have overpowering Air Cover so Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador knows we no playing games No More, He had his Chance

The problem is that it is nowhere near being cut and dry. Mexico is full of dozens of cartels. All scrambling to be relevant. You remove one from the equation another pops up in it's place. There isn't a central "villain" to aim your crosshair at. It's a pile of random thugs doing thug things. The solution is not as simple as sending in the Military to eliminate a target. It's way more complex than that because there are large areas within Mexico where cartels openly move and operate just like a Policeman here in the US does while on the beat. State Dept travel advisories exist for a reason because there are parts of the world where your safety isn't guaranteed.

CPO Nate S.
SSgt Christophe Murphy I don't disagree as to complexity of the issue or the implied simplicity of sending in the military.
Also, you are 100% correct about the State Dept travel advisories. However, my family and I are considering a faith trip to Israel in 2 years as our church goes every other year. I have been to Israel several times while on AD.
It could be said that Israel is dangerous to travel to, but 1000s go to the Holy Land to renew their spirits. People take calculated risks all the time. This time the calculation was flawed, and people lost their lives.
Your comment "...The problem is that it is nowhere near being cut and dry. Mexico is full of dozens of cartels. All scrambling to be relevant. You remove one from the equation another pops up in it's place..." is true; however, don't nothing is also not acceptable just because.
So, a trip of 1000 miles with many points on that winding road is never completed unless one is willing to place one foot in front of the other to begin that trip no matter how difficult or uncertain. As with all war fighting it is about an integrated and clear battle plan to put interlocking field of fire down on the enemy to force the capitulation or destruction. My service with "my" Marines taught me that we have to adapt and overcome.
Just saying.............from an old FMF HM!!!

CPO Nate S. I’m not suggesting “doing nothing” but I don’t think sending in a Bn of troops would be the solution.
I spent a year in Jerusalem on MSG working at the Consulate (pre-Trump era). Israel definitely has it’s quirks and pros/cons. It’s an amazing country but their is certainly issues where officials abuse authority and go a little too far at times. But comparing Israel to Mexico is like comparing apples and oranges. There may be small similarities but there are way more differences

Find Their Source Of Water, Pour A Lot Of Salt To It.

Just A Thought, And Besides, It Can Be Done Without Firing A Shot;
But THEY Will Need A Lot More Toilet Paper

SSgt Christophe Murphy - I had the occasion Israel 3x during my career. Amazing people, scenery and people of all backgrounds.
Every nation has abused its authority and that is historically accurate!!!
I was only making the point that there a places that may be more dangerous than others. But like Mecca, Jerusalem is a Holy City and while areas of Jerusalem (not the old city) that have been bombed to attach the "old city" would be nuts. If "radical Arabs" bombed Mecca from a fundamentalist perspective and in that "fog" tried to create a message no one wants to heard, then all hell would break loose unless cooler heads prevailed.
That said, all I am saying is that if you gave me the key to NYC I was toss in the Atlantic Ocean. NOT impressed with the LACK of leadership!!!
BTW, I was NOT in any way attempting to compare Israel to Mexico. Yes, they are very different on many levels. Yet, all I am saying, is the mindset of cartel terrorist or religious terrorist is not dissimilar!!! Both threaten "...domestic tranquility..." and the ability to "...provide for the common defense..." so that the "...general welfare..." for all provides the basis upon which to built the objectives for the capacity "...establish justice..." so that each human being can "...secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity...". After all, why have a Preamble as the overarching themes upon which to build a society that so ALL of us can are able to "...mutually pledge to each other our Live, our Fortunes, and out Sacred Honor..." to assert that "...all (people) are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the (honest) pursuit of Happiness."
For me, the son and grandson of Holocaust survivors and a 1st generation American born in Texas, who grew up in the Deep South because that is where my father's USAF career took us before he was 100% SCD retired, understand on so many levels what other continue to remain ignorant of. That is - FREEDOM - is fight!!!
That is why those who excuse "THUGS" are themselves cowards!!!
Sorry, I am just venting! I agree with you! Yet, like many politics like the "Gentlemen, who pulled the Fire Alarm, now fanes ignorance, given his former professional background." Are you Freak'n kidding me. How many PhDs must you have to believe such BS! And, I am college educated. Amazing! Simple, Amazing!!!!

Loudly advertise the dangers of traveling to Mexico, if possible deny Americans from traveling to Mexico. We can not protect our citizens if they leave our borders.

Capt Jeff S.
Funny how Mexico cannot guarantee the safety of our citizens traveling there, yet they want us to treat their illegals with respect and dignity -- as if they have a right to be here.
The Democrats' weak leadership and Open Border policy is chiefly to blame for the troubles we're experiencing at our Southern Border. The government of Mexico needs to step up and do its part to discourage the cartels from engaging in illegal activity but the cartels wield a lot of influence and either buy off or intimidate local government leaders into looking the other way and allowing them to operate with impunity.
In this country, human trafficking has sharply increased, as well as the influx of fentanyl and other drugs that the Cartels get from China and hump across our Southern border.
A nation without borders will cease to be a nation. It's a no-brainer.
We are dealing with a Progressive Government Gone Wild. We have virtually lost control of our tone-deaf government, which seems to have this crazy idea that it doesn't have to answer to We The People for its actions (or better yet, LACK of actions to protect US citizens) and it refuses to answer for its abuses of power.
Our government selectively exercises judicial double standards and looks the other way when the Democrats engage in unlawful behavior. Our government has been trampling on the rights of citizens to speak freely, worship without interference, trying to take away our right to own guns, and it is trampling on our right to participate in free and fair elections... Our government has gotten away with collecting on US persons without warrant, unleashing the power of federal agencies to target groups it considers as threats [to the Democratic Party of Progressive Democratic Socialists] and labeling them as domestic terrorists, and people aren't being held accountable.
Something has to give and it is incumbent on citizens to ensure that our government is listening and representing the collective best interest of the people that elected them and balancing that with our national best interests, not the Progressive Special Interests, corporate lobbyists, and foreign and domestic special interests that influence our national policies.

Capt Jeff S. - Truly, the Democrats, in the current session, have pulled the mask completely off and shown themselves to be a completely lawless party. It's been there the whole time but it's like they almost don't care if you see it anymore; that or they don't think there's any consequence at all to be had for them.
I don't think it's a question of "weak leadership" as far as they are concerned though. I think it's all according to their ideological agenda, which is made more plain with the Biden administration than any other in my adult life.
Up to this point, I have seen them as essentially the same as the Republicans, just leaning into a different set of identities to pander to. I was surprised to learn in 2016 that the Democrat Party is fundamentally more corrupt and anti-democratic than the Republican Party on a structural level. Now, post 2022, all pretense has been shed. They are actively pushing the most anti-democratic measures they could possibly push, short of abolition of the Republic and a formal institution of an American Empire, with Joe Biden declared Dictator in Perpetuity.
Based on what they ARE doing, it seems that their goal is to actually bring about an end to the Constitutional Republic. Whether through blatant corruption, financial collapse or both is irrelevant as the result will be the same.

Since I seldom voice my opinion :^).
Quit worrying about policing the World, pull our troops out of NATO and places like Syria and station them on the southern border.
Impose of 50 mile deep no immigrant zone since the Cartels both use the illegals as mules and make money ferrying them across.
Actively target the Cartels since the Mexican Government seems to be unable to do it.
Make drugs like opium, heroin, fentanyl. etc, sales a capital crime.
Make use of those drugs a crime that gets you sent to mandatory resident rehab. I'm pretty cynical about the effectiveness of most rehabs, but they are off the street and probably won't OD during the rehab period. That would also clear up the so-called homeless issue.
Don't keep ANY of it secret. Show it on the evening news.

We do not need to target the cartels in Mexico, we just need to treat those caught in the US working for them as invaders. We start giving dirt naps to the coyotes and the cartels will find employees much harder to find. if we see a coyote across the border scouting out the Border Patrol we need take them out with a sniper rifle. Nobody will miss them and if we make it more dangerous to work against the US than refusing the cartels and we will see a decrease.

You do not have to cross the nominal international border to place yourself in harms way. Those of us who live south of the Frontero Nuevo - a line drawn from Los Angeles through Phoenix, White Sands, San Antonio and Houston have ample evidence that the cartels are already here.

Shipmate, many of us have realized this for some time, just as you have articulated. What is striking are the words of Capt Jeff S.. It is difficult to fight and win or simply travel abroad when your mind must always be focused on situational awareness, which all of us have been trained to the nth degree to do.
As I shared, when the simple elements of the Preamble to the US Constitution cannot be addressed and there is such "political fluidity" as COL Randall C. suggested with his comment about Tom Clancy's "Clear and Present Danger" we have ONLY ourselves to blame being asleep at the ships wheel. Meaning, when fellow citizens are so unaware of the real dangers in the world, they are willing to overlook them then they are shocked when something happens is a failure of every person who calls themself a CITIZEN of this still great nation with its vision as shared in the Preamble, then perhaps we have to endure this insanity to arrive at ultimate sanity once and for all!!!
Just saying...............................
Blessing always! Just a humble Chief....................

Been running the border since high school. Met and married SWMBO in México 50+ years ago. She brought a number of hectares into the marriage. The property needs presence annually due to various laws Prior to the mid 90's, the border was little more impediment than the agricultural checkpoint in Yuma between AZ & CA. We would cross at Nogales and drive the 15 all the way thru Hermosillo, to Guadalajara and on on to Nayarit. We stopped doing that during Bush II. Flew to Guadalajara for a wedding in 2012. Way too sketchy even for us. These days, in SOAZ, some of our favorite campgrounds are given over to illegal traffic. Cartel masacres happen as far north as Phoenix. Running gun battles up the 17 and 10 are not uncommon. Dinner out in the evening must be carefully thought out. It is easy to dump on the Dems over this because they deserve it, but the R's apathy just excerbates the situation. No clean politicians in this.

CWO4 Terrence Clark - Agree "APATHY" is a huge issue. Again, when Americans really read the Preamble to the US Constitution, and critically think about these words and why they were "really written" with foresight!
Then my 'fellow' (as it were) citizens (i.e., inhabitants) of this STILL GREAT NATION, when we get our collective heads out our #$#@#@*#@ will if they are honest with themselves need to clean house in the next 4 - 6 years and get any one with > 12 years in either house our an new blood in place.
Of course, some of us have long since been able to see the sunshine because the fresh air is welcome to some dank stinky place that only produces waste, you know that stuff that no longer has any real value!!! And if you don't keep your hands clear with soap and warm water one can easily infect themselves causing severe illness. LoL Like say - "professional" politicians!
BTW - "Chiefs are always - humble!" (ROTFLMSAO!!!)
God bless....................................

I dunno CPO Nate S.. I think the issues here are deeper than that. A lot of individuals refuse to take responsibility for their own actions any more. Willingly walking into an area with high crime, especially violent crime, is not the wisest of decisions. The other issue is the Cartels themselves. They control just about the entirety of Mexico and Latin America (overtly or clandestine). Chop one down and 10 more jump in to fill the void. I don't have a good answer to the problem. Scorched Earth policies isn't the way to win friends and influence people. Tactically, it's the most likely to succeed. Politically, it would be a disaster for the US as a whole.

CPO Nate S.
MSgt Steven Holt, NRP, CCEMT-P Yeppers! Failure to take responsibility is huge!
It is difficult for the government to take proper / productive actions when they don't even understand the words "...provide for the common defense..." so that they can "...insure domestic tranquility..." in such a manner as to "...promote the general welfare..." in their role and duty to "...preserve, protect, and defend..." so that the "...more perfect union..." being sought is done so with "...liberty and justice for all...".
This language may seem corny to some, but when we think about the Preamble and why it leads off the Constitution it is clear the failures that are taking place at many levels of leadership from local to national and international. The inability of political types and media types to accept and take responsibility for their words and actions (typically - inactions) is the weakest link we have as a nation.
I think it will take the will of truly INDEPENDENT voters (~40%) plus fed-up voters in each party (15% Dems) + 15% GPO to vote for COMMON SENSE and Independent candidates that ascribe to the deeper meeting of the Preamble and actually stick to their principles of independent vs crowd thinking to choose the right candidate to lead ALL of us out this abyss!!!

There is precedent for use of the military to protect our citizens dating back to the Barbary Wars. If the Feds have become to diplomatic for direct intervention, we need a review of the basic governmental responsibilities.

You have not included the option for those of us who believe those dumbas*es shouldn't have been down there in the first place. Lets get real. How many of "us" (RP members) would waltz into a warzone in a failed state? We shouldn't do anything because of these four ignoramuses'. However we should wipe the cartels from the face of the earth in a similar manner to the extirpation of the Barbary menace in the Mediterranean.
