Many of us have one thing that really gets to us. I have to say that probably my biggest pet peeve (as it pertains to the military) are ill fitted ACU tops. I constantly find myself explaining to people how their uniform should fit.

What is your pet peeve?

The officers and senior enlisted that allow Soldiers to fall into formation in a multitude of different uniforms. One person with gloves, one with a field jacket, one wearing a fleece cap. It's the "come as you are" Army.

Time thieves. Time thieves are my greatest irk as Soldiers who have time to write frivolous articles about issues they have absolutely no experience or training or self-development in that area are writing just for attention. If you put your energy to becoming an entrepreneur you can have a solid paycheck when you are ready to get out. Time thieves are attention seekers and write articles about stuff such as "hands in pockets." IMO

Surely CSM the grass needs to be mowed somewhere. ;) I retired a year ago and have started 5 businesses since then so I can work from home and steal a moment or two away now and then. On a serious note, I just see so many people waste their time and when they retire or get out they want someone to take care of them. Whereas they could be using their free time for college or even starting and running a business in their spare time which is very easy to do. I am the creator also of http://www.MyRangerBiz.com. Feel free to contact me if any of you need a mentor on being a business owner while serving or not. [login to see]

I would have a few that I would have to put down:

1. Punctuality. As a troop-Learn how to friggin' read a watch. I do understand, even though it irks me, that when I am on the "time" of my supervisors-they are on time when they get there, I am there on time-at the appointed time. Sometimes it is out of their control, sometimes they forget, sometimes the attitude is "they can wait". If it is feasible, the polite thing to do is make a notification of ETA, so that for example, someone could get a cup of joe. Just saying.

2. The E1/3 and the O1 (not prior E) know it all. As a young troop, try and silence (I would say shut, but not trying to offend anyone) your mouth and open your mind-you went to high school or college, fantastic, now we are in U-pick-a-stan doing real world work, pay attention. You really do not know it all. You know the bare minimum from whatever basic training and follow-on schooling you have attended. {Caveat to this is that there are some young troops and some 2ndLts who have real honest to God life experience that is relevant}. But for the most part, if you will pay attention to the NCOs and really learn the job from the ground up as a troop, and as a young officer, if you will pay attention to the senior Os, and to the SNCOs, your career will flourish. We are on the same team, if I teach you to be a better Officer, or a better troop, then OUR entire military benefits. BOOM.

3. Uniform. Unless in the field, you should take every effort to wear the uniform as if you are representing perfection. You are. Our brothers and sisters paid for that uniform with their blood. Honor that, you represent them and their sacrifice.

4. Be honest/have integrity. If you screw up, own it. Shocker-not the first person to make a mistake. Learn and move on.

SFC Brown,

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that one.  I use to "ranger roll" my PC all the time down range, when no one really cared of course.  Now it's a habit at times and hard to not do when i put my PC on in garrison.  I think it looks better than just putting your PC on and leaving it whatever way it sits.  I get corrected from time to time but i don't complain i just say roger and fix it.  Sometimes i wish the Army had caps like the Marines or Navy, they look more "professional" in my opinion.

I think your response gets right to the original point of this thread.  You have a habit that you don't see any reason to break, even after repeated corrections.  The PC isn't supposed to be worn "whatever way it sits", it's supposed to be cylindrical in appearance with a flat top.  It's not really that difficult to make it that way, even after use and abuse all day, it just takes a little time and effort.  The Marine and Navy cap also looks terrible if it's not taken care of.  The Army uniform can look very professional if it's worn and taken care of with respect and pride.
It's really up to leaders to set the example, then not just make corrections, but train or retrain to what right looks like.  It's pointless to make a correction if you're out of tolerance, too.  I think when that happens, it's almost better to not have made the correction in the first place, because you've just destroyed any credibility you had.

It's nearly impossible for top to stay flat, i would have to buy a new PC every month.  And we are not allowed to starch it.  The Marines and Navy also have a device that they put on the inside of their head gear to give it that nice stiff and crisp appearance.  And when i say ranger roll i do not mean a extreme one i simply pat down the middle slightly every time after I put it on. I guess it's because i'm a part of the Y generation lol.  I will try to break this bad habit of mine non the less.

Ill-fitting uniforms.  Example:  Too tiny jackets, pants too large, hats squeezing off circulation to the brain, etc. It's all in the first chapter of AR 670-1.  It shows that someone treats buying the clothes they have to wear every single day as something that is not deserving of forethought and giving those people responsibility frightens me.

Changing the name for AR 600-9 made perfect sense.  It is not about how much you weigh.  A 300 lbs Soldier can meet the standard while a 150 lbs Soldier of the same age, height, and gender can fail.  It is about body composition, especially body fat as measured by tape.

I don't wear the dress uniforms often, but that's what irks me. I get peeved about people who don't know what awards they have or in which order they go. Yes, campaign and service awards get given out like candy- but not knowing which ones you are authorized shows you don't pay attention to details or even your surroundings (and often don't care to update your record).

Second, if you can't put them in the right order, it tells me you don't even know the basic concept of how to either reference 670-1 or even conduct a basic Google search.

Sir,<div><br></div><div>Great post. It amazes me how much Soldiers (all ranks) don't know what goes where. My MOS caused me to use a 6 inch ruler on a daily basis while working. However I was anal on my uniform before when I was Infantry. Some Soldiers just need to be taken to the side and talked to about their appearance and knowing the reg in the dress uniform.</div><div><br></div><div>We had a BDE ball last year and the flyer clearly stated low quarters would be worn but we still had Soldiers show up with their jump boots. Even had one Soldier show up with high waters cause he had his pants hemmed to the jump boot height.</div>

My biggest AR 670-1 peeve is that the uniforms the Army most commonly wears, the ACU's and the ASU's, aren't covered by AR 670-1. The "Uniform regulation" does not cover the most commonly worn uniforms..

I Detest the way shaving profiles are misinterpreted, there is a max length that facial hair must not exceed, and it must not be trimmed in one area for "style" and not in others. I have witnessed many a soldier who adheres to the standard in the profile. however I have corrected many a soldier on there interpretation of the standard. I have had a shaving profile most of my career, until my skin was so weathered it refused to bump up after being shaved. while I wore a face full of untamed hair during the week and shaved on Sunday it was allowed to grow UN STYLED during the week which is what was the guidance given me by both the medical personnel, and good ole 670-1. Although I have been informed there are amendments to 670-1 in the form of 670-let it ride till I get caught! that is the one that chaps my hide so to speak

1SG Quackenbush,

Might that PA have been assigned to 82 GSAB about the time you were there?  06-08 time frame, and then he moved to work at Robinson Health Clinic before PCSing?  If so he an I worked together quite a bit in 08

The only way to keep your hands warm in gloves is to wear Bear Claws over the gloves (Antarctica).  And I also hate hands in pockets - especially "The Lone Sailor."  But I love the Statue.

IMO it is not a good rule. How does it make you look like a shitbag? Now within reason, not while addressing an officer/nco is obvious. They shouldn't have put those pockets if they didn't want them to be used. And if they wanted those pockets but didn't want us to use them they should have made them in a different design such as a smaller cargo pocket there.  I should not have to carry around a shit ton of gloves in my pockets or an assault pack just because I cannot use my pockets. Just my take.

Beret black
I have so many, but probably tops would be a badly worn beret. I was never a fan of Army-wide berets in the first place, but if you're going to wear it, wear it right!

You are right about the berets on both counts. I have always said that the beret is a useless piece of head gear with one exception. It doesn't stop shrapnel, it doesn't keep the sun out of you eyes, it doesn't keep the rain off of your neck, it doesn't keep you ears warm but it sure impresses civilians! The berets that the US Army currently wears look sloppy and thus ridiculous. Our European allies make jokes about them. Why did they change from the style we wore during the Vietnam era?
