Unit history

DIU was launched in August 2015 as "Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx)." In May 2016, SecDef Ash Carter announced a reboot, designating that it report directly to his office. In August 2018, DIUx was re-designated the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to indicate the organization's permanence.
