Ever wanted to live on post? Ever been on the official waiting list? How long have you had to wait before? What's the longest you had to wait? The shortest? Is it even worth it anymore waiting for a home to be offered? Please share your success or frustration.

The list for E-5/6 2BR housing was over 2 years long at Fort Irwin. I never did get it. Instead, we enjoyed the 45 mile ride to work and the 45 miles home. That was the town of Barstow. I only survived the 3 years of driving on practically zero sleep because I was a youngster.

I grew up in Newberry Springs...could not imagine doing that drive to the fort everyday.

Got told 6-12 months for Company Grade housing when I got married. Ended up with an Apartment on the south west corner of scenic Barstow. I honestly do not remember how I got home most days...lucky.

You would think they would get a clue and build more houses, the money is there.

When I got married, we were married at 0800 and moving in to our base housing by 1200. When I PCS'ed to my current base, it was a week.

When I switched from Mechanized infantry to Air Force 605-2T2 it was like I had gone on vacation

We only lived on-base in 2 places... 1) Mannheim, Germany- before we had kids for a 2 bedroom was maybe a week once I applied. 2) JBER- 2 weeks for a 4 bedroom that was brand new. I think we got pretty lucky on both counts.
