People with Schizophrenia Show Distinct Brain Activity When Faced with Conflicting Information

Scientists have known for decades that the classic symptoms of schizophrenia, such as jumping to conclusions or difficulty adjusting to new information, can be attributed to poor communication between the cerebral cortex and the thalamus, known as the brain’s central switchboard. By measuring brain cell activity between these two regions as volunteers completed ambiguous tasks, a team of Tufts University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine researchers found a way to use someone’s sensitivity to uncertainty as a diagnostic tool.
In a study published November 7 in the journal Cell Reports Medicine, the researchers show that people with schizophrenia generate distinct neural patterns when asked to make decisions based on conflicting information. The work offers one of the first biological tests to assess whether someone is prone to inflexible thinking and, by monitoring changes in these patterns, a new way to measure whether treatments are working.

I hope they can figure some ways of helping those who suffer from this. The disease seems to be on its way to being more prevalent today.

Scary thought that this ailment is becoming more common. And the psychotropic medicines used to control it are being abused by healthy folks who want to modify their sense of reality. I am growing ever more curious about why so many people cannot live with reality. The world is surely not perfect, but it beats living in a drug-affected state. Note that I am NOT criticizing folks who need medicine to combat mental illness.

MAJ Hugh Blanchard it has to do with your receptors, chemicals, axioms, pathways, neurons, part of your brain and other many tiny details, including heredity. Which you can inherit bi-polar & schizophrenia from family member's. It usually does not show until your in your early to mid 20's which is sad..however tons of money and research has been going to into genetics of how to eliminate this

We still are unsure of its pathogenesis. It is a crippling disorder which is managed by psychotropic meds.

Bethina Lee My wife went through this for years with her mother. Night and day between on and off meds. Realistically there's nothing a doctor can do, they prescribe based on the beliefs that people will take those meds daily. Personally I think that the phrase 'as needed' should be taken off med instructions that doctors determine require continuous dosing.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen there are many medications that ppl can suffer severe withdraws from..I have 1 that the withdrawals are terrible and similar to an addict's withdrawals.
You may find this company interesting, I lost my daughter's results, but the testing is extremely chemically detailed, to the point they will tell you the Alleles that are on or off in your RNA/DNA; and which medications your chemical makeup will utilize to benefit each person and their disorders. Also, I had problems too; turned out it was my hormones that were preventing the delivery system of the medications I had taken for 20 years. Docs switched meds for me...also keep this in mind, as you age, your chemical makeup is consistently changing from hormones, environmental influences, stress, diet/nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation, RNA/DNA makeup, stress, etc, etc...as well as genes that you inherited that can change as you age..(bi l-polar & schizoid disorders come with age) however the doctor or specialist should take this all into account. When anyone finds a specialist or doctor like this..hold onto them for dear life LOL..

All of my daughter's specialist and doctors are at the forefront of research of autism. Also as well other mental disorders that will change your overall personality & brain, plus medications that are considered too dangerous for most of their clientele...there are exceptions, like my daughter, who they send out to a brain surgeon & neurologist specialist, in her feild, when they were running into dead ends. They had enough humility to admit that her regular meds, therapies, and other medical needs were not being conducive with the knowledge & medications that they normally prescribe. It's an extremely fine balance and I was not letting the matter rest with complacency and acceptance of my daughter's normal pediatrician. It's always good to
Get a Second guess and entertain a 2od or 3rd opinion by other specialist/doctors. Don't be hesitant about questioning doctors and specialist..if they become upset or have that "God Complex" leave!
