Pumping carbon dioxide waste to rooftop gardens boosts crop yields

Rooftop gardens are a great way to make urban communities more sustainable, economical, and enjoyable for residents. That said, there’s a reason they aren’t as ubiquitous as many would expect—because of issues such as increased solar radiation and higher wind speeds, the conditions generally aren’t as favorable for plants as they are at ground level. Thanks to recent breakthrough developments, however, rooftop yields could dramatically increase thanks to some ingenious rerouting of buildings’ typical carbon dioxide emissions.
According to a paper published last week in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, researchers constructed a new ventilation system reliant on a Boston University building’s normal carbon exhaust system to act as fertilizer for both spinach and corn crops. Meanwhile, control plants grown nearby employed their own fan system to ensure airflow sans building emissions. The resulting yields were noticeable, to say the least.

Interesting idea, Charlie, but too much CO2 might grow vegetation that grows so large the overall weight on the roof of some buildings might cause damage to the roofs underpinnings... That said, if it is food vegetation, perhaps it would not... Interesting none-the-less...

Yes you're exactly right!! One of my x's was a civil engineer, the structural integrity and all building of the frame to the externals have to be taken into considerations. Weight of the plants & future weight, weight of the soil being wet, and future growth of all plants...then the maintenance aspects and how "overgrown" you want this roof top garden to be..all about variables and consistencies. There was a Toyota Plant in Tennessee that had a roof like this...also in Augusta, the local Carrabba's did not have any "garden space" for the normal herbs and landscaping that franchises usually plants. So they placed the garden on the roof...it was definitely a "eye stopper"

I'll send you some free of charge. I use leaves primarily on the lawn over the fall and winter.

Best thing to do; plant some apple trees (or anything in the Rosaceae family) they will mow down to the ground. Use "Composted" cow manure, or other grass eating animal; you place the main piles in an area for the waste to decompose and keep any seeds within the waste. Basically it "Cooks" and sterilizes any seeds present in the manure..as the manure breaks down, the bacteria provides extra heat and nutrients to plants.
