Because each of these dyes and chemicals had been tested and found safe for human consumption, and were therefore approved by the FDA.
Since then other researchers found that if you expose mice to a billion times the concentration, some of the mice will get sick.
That explanation is somewhat facetious. In many cases the newer research is using more modern methods or finding new effects that weren't tested decades ago when these products were introduced. On the other hand, there are calls to ban many products that really are based on testing at absurd quantities or concentrations. Note, for example, that damn near everything in the world now carries the California Prop 65 warning that the product "may contribute to an individual's overall lifetime risk of cancer or risk of birth defects or other reproductive harm"
By the way, Red 3 has already been banned nationally with the same 2027 and 2028 effective dates.
