The Department of Defense is America's largest government agency. With military tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times, the department has grown and evolved with our nation. Their mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation's security.
There are six branches in the U.S. military: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and the newly created Space Force. The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard are the armed forces of the United States with 3.4 Million Service Members and Civilians serving in the U.S. armed forces which includes the men and women who are serving in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard, including the National Guard and Reserve components. The Army National Guard and the Air National Guard are reserve components of their services and operate in part under state authority.
